Do you have a leaking toilet cistern?

If you’re getting larger than expected water bills one of the first places you should check is your toilet cistern. is it leaking through into the pan? a small unnoticeable trickle can soon add up, so it’s good to stop it early.

There are a few things you can try yourself to rule this out;

Visual and sound check

The most simple check for a leaky toilet cistern is to observe the water surface in the pan, if there are ripples you definitely have a leak. if the leak is very small this might not be apparent.

Listen for an occasional ‘hissing’ sound from the cistern, This is your inlet (or top valve topping up. If this is happening regularly you almost certainly have a leak (or in need of a new inlet valve)

Colour test

Another test you can do (if you don’t have time to watch and listen to your toilet all day) is to simply lift the lid of your cistern, drop in some food colouring and come back later. If the colouring has seeped into your pan you definitely have a leak.

The fix

You can attempt a DIY fix, and if it works out you can do it fairly cheaply. Most cistern seals, valves and flushers can be found at hardware stores and plumbing centres. although if you're not DIY inclined you may end up costing yourself more in the long run.

We recommend calling your local licensed plumber at www.sonicplumbing.com.au for an expert repair job.
